NPFs SOLSTRAND SEMINARS have been a popular meeting place for ecnomists in the
oil and gas industry. The last 8 years at Solstrand Hotel & Bad at Os near Bergen.
Introduction to this years seminar:
Environmental awareness has put CO2 management as a focus area for most companies in the industry. Professor Alexander Kemp from University of Aberdeen, opens this section and will have a session concerning long-term option contracts for carbon emissions. Ståle Aakenes from Gassnova will follow up with his presentation: "Norway - an early mover in carbon capture and storage".
The business environment at the Norwegian continental shelf has been changed after the announced merger of Statoil and Norsk Hydro's oil and energy division, the two largest oil and gas operating companies in Norway. The new company, StatoilHydro, will account for 80% of Norway´s petroleum production and its main owner, the government, plans to increase its share from 62.5% to 67% in the new company.
Petroleum strategist Hans Henrik Ramm will address the merger’s effects on diversity and innovation of the Norwegian petroleum cluster and ECON's Eivind Magnus will provide a view on the socio-economic effects.
Decision making and risk management are key components of any capital allocation process. Ron Allred, director in ConocoPhillips explains how risk can be seized and
quantified at a project level while professor Reidar Bratvold from UiS provides an
introduction to decision science and goes further into heuristics and biases in reasoning.
The second day of the seminar is divided into two sections. The first section is a continuation of the decision making session but deals more specifically with investment analysis and features StatoilHydro's analyst Bård Misund on valuation of international oil companies and professor Thore Johnsen from NHH on investment risk and return.
The second and last section will start with Knut Einar Rosendahl, researcher from SSB, who will present: "Globalisation of gas markets" with details of the model as well as results.
Tor Kartevold, special adviser, Statoil ASA, will present "Market outlook" with supply demand seen from within the industry. The next presentation and one of the most important input parameter of any economic analysis - The future price of oil and gas. Professor Øystein Noreng from BI, will hold a presentation titled: "Oil prices and exchange rates - the record and prospects". This importent subject will close the seminar.
